FC Barcelona were unable to afford many new signings for Hansi Flick in the last summer transfer window when he took charge of the Blaugrana team.
However, fortunately, the German tactician had recourse to a very talented La Masia, which provided him with the options required to fill in any weak points in the team.
This ability of the Barcelona academy to produce top-class players who are ready to play with the first team was displayed quite clearly as Flick looked for a midfield pivot from the youth ranks.
At the start of the season, he called up Marc Bernal and made him his starting midfield pivot. However, the young midfielder was unlucky to suffer a serious injury only a few games into the season and had to remain on the sidelines since his injury in the match against Rayo Vallecano on 27th August.
Bernal is not expected to return to action this season and is thus going through a very difficult period in his career. However, according to Mundo Deportivo, he has still asked Hansi Flick to take him with the team for the Spanish Super Cup campaign in Saudi Arabia.
Flick has granted him this request, and thus, the injured midfielder will travel with the team for this trip which can hand them their first title of the season.
On the other hand, Marc-André ter Stegen will remain in Barcelona as he wants to avoid a long trip to continue to work on his recovery at the Ciutat Esportiva de Sant Joan Despi.
This is particularly the case as his injury is more recent than that of Bernal’s, with the German suffering a torn patellar tendon in the match against Villarreal on 22nd September, almost a month after Bernal’s injury.
