Sunderland will be without the services of five first team players for their trip to Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night.
They take on Stanley on the road in the first round of the League Cup, searching for their first win of the season.
But their task for the clash has been made even harder by injuries to several players.
The club have confirmed that Glenn Loovens, Ethan Robson and Duncan Watmore all remain out with varying fitness issues.
They had hoped to welcome Denver Hume and Dylan McGeouch back into the fold for the trip to Lancashire.
However, the Sunderland Echo report that they too will also miss out as Jack Ross is unwilling to risk them at this time.
The game follows 1-1 draws in each of their opening two games of the League One campaign.
