Manchester City were forced to raise their total proposal to Palmeiras for Vitor Reis in order to get a deal over the line for the 19-year-old this month, according to reports.
The Brazilian centre-back was confirmed as the second arrival into Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad on Tuesday morning, appearing for training alongside his new teammates later in the day ahead of the club’s UEFA Champions League fixture away to PSG this week.
Reis followed in the footsteps of fellow defensive talent Abdukodir Khusanov, who was unveiled as a new signing 24 hours earlier after completing a bigger-money switch from French side RC Lens.
The expectation for both players is that they are both ready to feature immediately in Premier League action under Pep Guardiola, and that first opportunity will come on Saturday evening against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
And that faith and trust put in Vitor Reis in particular has been showcased through the manner in which Manchester City handled their negotiations with Palmeiras, as new details have emerged in Brazilian media this week.
According to the information of UOL’s André Hernan, behind-the-scenes Manchester City’s first offer to Palmeiras for Vitor Reis was worth a fixed fee of €25 million plus bonuses that could reach a total of €10 million.
However, it is claimed that the Brazilian club ‘put their foot down’ in negotiations and wanted a guaranteed €35 million, while Manchester City wanted to take the 19-year-old defender immediately in the ongoing window.
It is stated that at that point, the two clubs shook hands and staff around the player and at Palmeiras state that the total valuation of the deal involving the two clubs came to €37 million.
Pep Guardiola had the opportunity to issue his first words about Manchester City’s confirmed two defensive arrivals when he spoke to the media from Paris on Tuesday night, insisting that the pair have come to the club for “many years”.
“Welcome to them, to the (Manchester) City family, I’m really pleased! They’re really young, young players, so they come for many years and different types,” Guardiola told reporters from the Parc des Princes.
He continued, “(Abdukodir) Khusanov played here in France, so physically is extraordinary, hopefully he can learn as quick as possible. And Vitor (Reis) is a young talent in Brazil, and I’m really pleased.”
Pep Guardiola will likely provide a further update on whether either Vitor Reis or Abdukodir Khusanov will make their competitive debuts for Manchester City against Chelsea on Saturday evening, when he faces the media during his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.
