Reigning Serie A champions Inter saw off 10-man Monaco 3-0 at Giuseppe Meazza in the Champions League’s league-phase finale. In doing so, Simone Inzaghi’s charges equaled an impressive feat at Europe’s top table.

According to Opta, last night’s clean sheet saw Inter become the first team in the Champions League to keep six consecutive home clean sheets since Atletico Madrid in 2016. Furthermore, they’re the first Italian club to achieve this outstanding milestone since Juventus in 2005.

Defensive solidity has been the backbone of the Italian giants’ sterling European campaign. Except for a last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen on matchday six, Inter registered a shutout in all seven remaining league-phase outings.

As such, they completed the first stage of Europe’s elite club competition as the best defensive team. Indeed, Inter veteran Yann Sommer conceded at least two goals fewer than any other goalkeeper in this Champions League campaign.

Reduced to ten men after only 12 minutes, Monaco failed to unleash a shot on target at Meazza. However, numerical advantage takes nothing away from an incredible team effort Inter put on last night. They could’ve progressed directly into the round of 16 with a draw.

Instead, they packed a punch in their most prolific Champions League outing this term. Inter captain Lautaro Martinez confirmed his long-awaited return to form with a scintillating hat-trick, drawing level with Sandro Mazzola as the club’s joint-top scorer in this competition.

Buoyed by another remarkable European night, Inter will take on fierce rivals Milan in a revenge-poised Derby della Madonnina on Sunday.
