Like Napoli, Inter won’t have one of their linchpin for the clash between the two league toppers, as Yann Sommer suffered a right thumb fracture in training. He’ll undergo further tests in the coming days to determine the best rehab route. In the meantime, he’s set to miss about a month, Sky reports.
The Swiss talisman could be back for the tilt versus Atalanta on March 16th. He’ll skip the fixtures against Genoa, Lazio, in Coppa, the Partenopei, and Monza. He’ll also sit out the first leg of the next Champions League round versus PSV or Feyenoord.
Sommer has basically manned the sticks in every Inter game so far despite his age, the intense schedule, and the fact that the team invested €13.5M to sign a new deputy, Josep Martinez, last summer. He has allowed 28 goals and kept 19 clean sheets in 35 matches.
The Spaniard will make his Nerazzurri debut in Serie A against his former team. He has starred just once so far, in a two-nil victory over Udinese in the Coppa Italian in mid-December. He has 68 appearances with the Grifone under his belt, while he featured with RB Leipzig and Las Palmas earlier in this career. Alessandro Calligaris will serve as the backup since third-stringer Raffaele Di Gennaro is hurt.
It’s quite ironic that both teams will have to make do without two of their most irreplaceable men, but in reality, it is odd that Simone Inzaghi hasn’t given at least a couple more chances to his deputy. He might not be superb but he was perfectly fine in Liguria. All they can hop is that he’s not rusty.
