Carlos Augusto was handed a rare UEFA Champions League start as Inter Milan swept Red Star Belgrade aside with a 4-0 victory.
During his post-match interview with Sky Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, the ex-Monza wingback delivered a verdict on his performance.
Frequently benched in favor of Federico Dimarco, Carlos Augusto has seen his first-team opportunities at a premium since swapping Monza for Giuseppe Meazza.
Therefore, he must take advantage of every chance that comes his way.
A home match against sub-par opposition was a presentable opportunity for the 25-year-old to prove his worth to Simone Inzaghi.
He nearly seized midway through the second half. Unfortunately, the final touch let him down as he squandered a sitter.
Dispatched one-on-one with Omri Glazer, Augusto could only hit the Red Star goalkeeper from point-blank range.
However, that was an opening he would’ve probably put away during his Monza days.
Seemingly aware of that, Augusto admits he should’ve done better.
Moreover, he hopes to rediscover his scoring instincts sooner rather than later.
“We knew they were playing at the back, but we worked well creating chances. After the first goal, we took advantage of it more,” Augusto said about the triumph.
“It’s a new league, it’s important to win.
“After the derby, it was tough, but we showed the strength of the group again today with many changes.
“The championship is long and we have to win as many games as possible.”
Augusto maintains that victory is all that matters, although he regrets fumbling a golden scoring opportunity.
“The team’s victory is more important, but I was pissed about the missed chance.
“I have to go back to the numbers I had before, but the team is more important.
“We look ahead and hope to score goals.”
