It’s no secret that Inter are in the market for a new central defender.

Simone Inzaghi is hellbent on injecting fresh blood into his aging squad.

Therefore, the 20-time Italian champions are ready to cut ties with one of their veteran stars at the end of the season.

Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij is a potential candidate, alongside former Lazio ace Francesco Acerbi.

Both players have been outstanding over the past few years.

However, they’ve entered the autumn of their playing careers, forcing Inter to explore the market for possible alternatives.

And the name of Bertola has emerged high on Beppe Marotta’s wishlist.

Bertola has enjoyed a rise to prominence at Spezia since breaking onto the senior stage in December 2021.

Interestingly, new Juventus manager Thiago Motta launched him into the pro squad.

He has since developed into an indispensable first-team star at Stadio Alberto Picco.

Truth be told, a season-long loan at third-tier outfit Montevarchi Calcio Aquila in 2022/23 helped his growth.

Since returning from his successful loan spell, Bertola has nailed a starting berth at Spezia as his own.

However, his contract runs out at the end of the season.

With Spezia unable to offer him a deal he deserves, there’s a genuine probability that he’d leave next year.

Thus far, the club could only offer him a meager €260,000-a-year contract, featuring a release clause set at €4.5 million.

But Bertola will turn down the proposal in all likelihood.

Considering his vast potential and affordable wages, Inter could make a concrete approach soon.
