Inter Milan are hoping to sign Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk on a free transfer in the summer.

Simeone Inzaghi’s side have secured several high-profile free agents in recent transfer windows and are monitoring Van Dijk’s situation at Anfield. The Liverpool captain’s current deal expires in the summer and there has been no announcement on a potential extension.

Liverpool have submitted a proposal to the Netherlands international, as the Reds look to keep Van Dijk on Merseyside beyond the end of the campaign. However, Van Dijk will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides from tomorrow.

The 33-year-old is believed to want to remain at Liverpool if an agreement can be reached. Discussing his future earlier this month, Van Dijk told Amazon Prime: “I love the club, the club loves me. I love the fans, the fans love me and it is a very good foundation to be successful.

“In my opinion I can play for another three, four years at least at the highest level. We will see what the future brings.”

Inter are prepared to offer the Dutch defender an alternative, though Van Dijk’s high wages are an obstacle to the Serie A side.

Inter have signed the likes of Marcus Thuram, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Stefan de Vrij and Piotr Zielinski as free agents in recent transfer windows. The club’s clever recruitment has helped the Nerazzurri to two Scudetti in the last three seasons and the 2023 Champions League final.
