Alessandro Bastoni was a rare shining light in Inter’s dismal 3-2 Supercoppa Italiana defeat to AC Milan last night.
Per Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport via FCInterNews, only two Inter players boasted better ratings than the 25-year-old defender.
Naturally, these are the two goalscorers, Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi.
Bastoni wasn’t on the scoresheet, but his masterclass defending was equally noteworthy.
Indeed, he was the glue to keep Inter’s fragile-looking backline from falling apart for over an hour.
However, the Italian alone wasn’t enough to stop a determined Milan side from dethroning the Nerazzurri.
Bastoni’s last-ditch defending denied Alvaro Morata a clear-cut chance late in the first half.
His sliding tackle thwarted Alejandro Jimenez’s attempted cross when it looked like Morata could have a tap-in.
Yet, the Atalanta academy graduate refused to rest on his laurels.
Instead, he made another spectacular intervention to keep Tijjani Reijnders at bay midway through the second half.
The Dutchman had a goal at his mercy, only for Bastoni’s last-gasp tackle to deflect his close-range effort into safety.
Unfortunately, Yann Bisseck and Stefan de Vrij were not at Bastoni’s level, especially the former.
Rafael Leao had the German defender on the ropes since coming on early in the second half.
