Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi offered a fitness update on Marcus Thuram ahead of Saturday’s match against Napoli.

Speaking to the press via FCInterNews, Inzaghi admitted Thuram’s availability isn’t a foregone conclusion despite promising signs.

Marcus Thuram suffered an ankle injury in Inter’s 2-1 home win against Fiorentina earlier this month.

Therefore, Simone Inzaghi left him out of his squad for last night’s Coppa Italia clash against Lazio.

However, Marko Arnautovic excelled in his absence, netting a formidable strike to set the tone for a comfortable 2-0 win.

Despite the Austrian’s heroics, Thuram is still the club’s top scorer in Serie A this term with 13 goals.

As such, having him ready for this weekend’s trip to Naples would significantly boost Inter’s chances.

Though the Frenchman no longer feels pain in his ankle, Inzaghi confirms the medical team must still evaluate his condition.

“I didn’t see him on the field,” Inzaghi said. “He’s working separately. We hope he can return to training the day after tomorrow.

“But there are no certainties, even though he has shown great willingness.”

Meanwhile, Inzaghi congratulated his team for a superb performance against Lazio.

“We played a great match against a strong, well-organized, and physically capable team,” he continued.

“We suffered together in the first half, we have some absences, but we try to compensate.

“Some players who might not have played if not for these absences stepped up, and I congratulated the team.

“We wanted the semifinal, and we knew it would be very tough.”

Inzaghi Opens Up on Injury Crisis

Inter lost Matteo Darmian to injury last night.

Indeed, the Italian veteran has joined Carlos Augusto, Nicola Zalewski, and Yann Sommer on the sidelines.

“We have some issues to manage – we’re missing Zalewski, Carlos Augusto, and Darmian,” Inzaghi maintained. “In the next five matches, we’ll only have Dumfries and Dimarco available.

“Either I change the formation, or we’ll have some difficulties.

“Today, we switched to a 4-4-2, a system we’ve used maybe twice in 200 matches over the last four years.

“We’re struggling, but these games shouldn’t scare us – we will have an intense semifinal.”

Furthermore, he hailed Piotr Zielinski’s showing.

“He played a great match, but I don’t want to focus only on him,” Inzaghi added.

“I think about Asllani and Frattesi, who underwent treatment day and night to be available.

“Zielinski did well, but so did everyone else, including Taremi, who has been dealing with an issue since the Lecce match.

“He sacrificed himself, as did Marko, who scored. Then there’s Bisseck and De Vrij – we all know what they bring.”
