For more than a month, Inter have been weighing up their options in defense.

The Nerazzurri haven’t hid the fact that they want to sign a left-footed defender. This would be to give Alessandro Bastoni a backup while Carlos Augusto covers at wingback with Tajon Buchanan out.

There had been the idea of an experienced stopgap solution on a free transfer. The Berazzyrri considered the likes of Ricardo Rodriguez and Mario Hermoso.

Then, Inter had reportedly been on the verge of a deal for defender Juan Cabal before he instead joined Juventus.

Meanwhile the likes of Zenit St. Petersburg’s Robert Renan, Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior, and Genoa’s Johan Vazquez have also been on the Nerazzurri’s radar.

More recently, links have emerged to Nantes defender Nathan Zeze, Dinamo Zagreb defender Mauro Perkovic, and Valencia defender Yarek Gasiorowski.

However, in the last week or so Inter have begun to focus their search on a new target.

Inter Pushing To Sign Talleres Defender Tomas Palacios

At 21 years of age, Talleres-owned defender Palacios is certainly the right age profile for Inter owners Oaktree Capital, who have clearly expressed the preference to invest in younger players.

And the Nerazzurri believe that the Argentine also has the right profile as a defender.

Palacios is left-footed and used to playing on the left side of a back three.

Therefore, the 21-year-old is the player who Inter are focusing their efforts on.

A deal will be a tricky to work out. This is because of Palacios’s ownership situation.

At the moment, the young defender is on loan at Independiente Rivadivia from Talleres. However, Rivadivia have a purchase option on 50% of his contract.

At the end of the loan spell – which runs until the end of December – Rivadivia can purchase have of Palacios’s contract for a fee of €2 million.

As such, Inter must convince not only Talleres but also Rivadivia with an offer that would see the loan cut short.

Inter are offering €6 million in total – plus a percentage of future resale.

There is interest from the Bundesliga, but Palacios himself prefers a move to Inter.

Nerazzurri Vice-President Javier Zanetti – certainly no stranger to Argentine football – has been personally part of the talks, as Inter aim to get a deal over the line in the next few days.
