Marco Materazzi has strongly advised Davide Frattesi to reconsider his decision to sever ties with Inter Milan for Roma.
In his recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport via Calciomercato, Materazzi offered his view of Frattesi’s troubles.
The former center-back understands the 25-year-old’s frustration with a lack of regular first-team football at the San Siro.
However, he reminded Frattesi that swapping Inter for Roma would be a step back in his career.
Indeed, the ex-Sassuolo man won the Scudetto with the Nerazzurri last term and has a chance to do it again this season.
Meanwhile, Claudio Ranieri’s men find themselves stuck in mid-table.
There’s no doubt that Frattesi would have more first-team opportunities at the Stadio Olimpico.
But it’s also worth noting that his hopes of fighting for honors would significantly dwindle in the capital.
Nonetheless, it’s Frattesi’s decision to make.
His agent is already forcing him to leave, and he appears to be giving in to the pressure.
“Davide, think carefully. Leaving the Nerazzurri would be a serious mistake.
“If I were Frattesi, I wouldn’t act impulsively. I could have done the same in 2006, but I didn’t, and it was the best decision I made during my ten years at Inter.
“The signal from the club is significant, and Frattesi cannot overlook it, even though he might want more playing time.
“In a year and a half at Inter, he has earned the respect of everyone.
“The club that made great financial sacrifices to sign him, the coach who strongly wanted him, and the fans who see him as a key figure in last season’s Scudetto triumph.
“Frattesi scored his first goal for Inter in the derby and has netted other decisive, crucial goals.
“His celebration last year after the goal against Verona, climbing the barrier with veins bulging, is an iconic image of the second star.
“All of this translates to enormous credit.
“It’s the club where he grew up, and he would have more consistent playing time there. But one must also consider the big picture.
“At Inter, Frattesi has already won and has the chance to do so again as part of a team competing at the top level on all fronts.
“At Roma, he would face a completely different and more challenging situation in terms of results.
“There’s also the risk of a kind of overexposure, let’s say, because in Rome, nothing is forgiven.
“Just look at Pellegrini, a Roman and a Roma supporter like Frattesi; until his goal in the derby, he went through some difficult moments.”
