Serie A champions Inter squeezed past newly promoted Como 2-0 in their last home league game of 2024. In doing so, Simone Inzaghi’s men achieved a piece of club history.

After dismantling Lazio in Serie A and easing past Udinese in their Coppa Italia last-16 tie, Inter must have expected another plain sailing against the newcomers. However, it wasn’t the case by any stretch of the imagination, especially in the first half.

Except for Federico Dimarco’s right-footed shot toward the end of the first half, Inter didn’t test Como goalkeeper Pepe Reina before halftime. Cesc Fabregas’ side fared outstandingly in the first half despite failing to create goalscoring opportunities.

Inter undid Como’s hard work only three minutes after the break. Hakan Calhanoglu’s inch-perfect corner-kick delivery found Carlos Augusto unmarked inside the six-yard box. The Brazilian defender headed the ball into the bottom corner to break the deadlock.

Como had to open up after falling behind, leaving acres of space behind, yet Inter couldn’t capitalize on their visitors’ new approach. When it looked like the match would end 1-0, Marcus Thuram stole the show with an outrageous strike from an acute angle to draw level with Mateo Retegui at the top of the Serie A scoring charts.

Let’s look at our player ratings.

Inter (3-5-2)

Yann Sommer – 7

Barring a comfortable save to deny Nico Paz’s long-range attempt, the Swiss ace didn’t have much to do until the ex-Real Madrid teenager forced him to make a reflex save midway through the second half.

Carlos Augusto – 7.5

Despite playing as a center-back, he spent most of the game on the opposition’s half. After an unconvincing first-half showing, he scored a crucial goal. Pulled off a decisive clearance to deny Como an equalizer!

Alessandro Bastoni – 7

Como’s feeble attacking effort was insufficient to trouble the Italian star. But his diagonal balls were below his high standard.

Yann Bisseck – 6.5

His interventions were erratic at times. However, he made up for a lack of skills with an aggressive attitude. Heavily involved in attack!

Federico Dimarco – 5.5

It wasn’t one of his best performances for Inter! His signature delivery into the box was nowhere to be seen.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6

Following an error-laden start to the game, the Armenian grew into the contest, setting up Denzel Dumfries on a silver plate late in the first half.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 6.5

His set-piece prowess led to Inter’s opener. The Turkish playmaker dictated the tempo with

Nicolo Barella – 6

The diminutive midfielder made too many sloppy passes, but his teammates, especially Lautaro Martinez, let him down, refusing to pass him the ball in critical moments.

Denzel Dumfries – 5.5

In addition to squandering Inter’s best chance in the first half, the Dutch wingback was wasteful in possession, often misplacing his passes.

Marcus Thuram – 7.5

As if scoring an absolute thunderbolt wasn’t impressive enough, the Frenchman demonstrated his class on multiple occasions, showing brilliant skills and tactical intelligence.

Lautaro Martinez – 4

Another frustrating evening for the Inter captain! Apart from fortuitously netting from an offside position, El Toro had no impact on the game.
