There are a host of questions that surround Manchester City currently. How they get out of their current poor run of form is the major one. What will they do in January to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad is another one. But there is another topic in the background of it all that may need to be addressed in the near future. That is the future of Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne.
No one associated with Manchester City wants to see De Bruyne depart the club. He is a club legend, and his performances during his time at the club firmly place him at the top of any list of Manchester City’s greatest-ever players. But the end of his career is coming. Given his age and injury history that isn’t a controversial call. It’s just the nature of football that all good things come to an end. That’s just the cold reality of the situation.
But what do the world champions do with De Bruyne? Come January he will have six months left on his current contract. The threat of this being De Bruyne’s final season at the club does loom large. A report from GIVEMESPORT indicates that this is increasingly likely to be De Bruyne’s final season as the world champions. The report from Danny Rust and Dean Jones indicates that De Bruyne has an interest in playing in the MLS. New MLS franchise San Diego FC is looming as a possible destination for De Bruyne to land at if he leaves the world champions.
I’ve always believed that Kevin De Bruyne has more than earned the right to decide how he finishes his career. His contribution to Manchester City affords him that luxury in my opinion. But to get to that point a discussion needs to be had between him and the club. The more City’s poor run of form continues the closer that time is coming.
What the two parties need to decide is what does the future hold for De Bruyne. Is he happy to stay at the world champions in a reduced role and help guide City’s rebuild with his experience, leadership and talent? Or is time for him to depart as a club legend? That’s for De Bruyne to decide. But Manchester City must also decide what is best for them going forward. It’s a delicate situation but one that does need to be resolved. Once a decision is made it allows both parties to move forward. If De Bruyne decides he wants to leave the world champions then he more than deserves a fitting farewell. If he decides that staying at Manchester City is the best move for him then both parties will continue on.
But the discussion that no one wants to contemplate is coming between Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester City. That is the just the reality of it all. A rebuild of the world champions squad is coming and whether or not De Bruyne is a part of that remains uncertain. The sooner it is resolved it will provide clarity for all parties. That’s just the cold hard facts of the situation surrounding Manchester City currently.
