With 18 matches still to play in League One, Sheffield Wednesday already appear to be on the home straight in chasing down automatic promotion and potentially also the league title.

The club will be gradually preparing a transfer strategy for the upcoming summer window, with another one potentially being put together just incase they are still in the third tier next season.

Promotion may increase the chances of clubs coming in for some of the Owls’ better players, they may have the financial security to keep hold of them, but that may not deter potential suitors from looking to test the waters early on.

We gathered the thoughts of a selection of FLW writers to see which player they believe will receive the most interest at Hillsborough this summer…

Simmey Hannifin-Donaldson

There are a few to choose from but Fisayo Dele-Bashiru could be a name that attracts interest this summer.

It feels as though he is constantly linked with transfers away during the last couple of windows, with some seriously big clubs linked with his signature.

Indeed, current Serie A champions AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven and Besiktas are just a few European sides believed to be monitoring his situation abroad, with domestic clubs such as Bristol City said to be doing the same.

The 22-year-old is clearly a talent and with a contract expiring this summer, the fact he soon becomes a free agent makes him an even more appealing proposition for interested clubs.

He’s certainly a player I see moving on from Hillsborough in the coming months.

Josh Cole

It would not be at all surprising if Josh Windass ends up attracting the most transfer interest from elsewhere this summer.

Linked with moves to the Championship and the Premier League in the past, Windass has shown that he is capable of performing at a higher level than League One during his career.

In the 2020/21 campaign, the 29-year-old was a stand-out performer for the Owls as he provided 15 direct goal contributions in the second-tier.

While Windass’ deal with the Owls is set to expire after the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, the third tier side are likely to trigger a clause which will extend his stay until 2024.

This could lead to Championship teams opting to test Wednesday’s resolve by submitting offers for the attacker.

Marcus Ally

It has to be Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

George Byers and Barry Bannan are coming towards the end of their contracts at Wednesday but it would be a huge surprise to see either of them not sign extensions in the summer.

The Owls would be set to receive a compensation payment if Dele-Bashiru moves on, but given his potential at just 22, a lot of clubs would be willing to accept that.

The 22-year-old has fallen out of favour since the turn of the year, and pre-contract agreements may have already been discussed, but if there is no update on his future before the end of the season clubs will begin to circle.

Dele-Bashiru has the quality to slot into a bottom half side in the second tier already, and enhanced by his contract situation he will not be short of suitors.
