In the final Clásico of the campaign, it was the former who ultimately emerged on the right side of a 3-2 result, in the process all but sealing the La Liga title.

Barcelona, however, were left livid following the full-time whistle at the Santiago Bernabéu, after seeing what they felt was a completely legitimate goal not awarded.

As much came upon youngster Lamine Yamal’s flick-on at the front post being shovelled out from the Real Madrid goal by Andriy Lunin.

With goal-line technology yet to be implemented in La Liga, the decision regarding whether or not the ball had crossed the line was in turn sent to the VAR team overseeing the action in Madrid.

And, following a lengthy check, the conclusion was reached that as much had not occurred.

Barcelona have since made crystal clear their disillusionment regarding the call, with president Joan Laporta having gone as far as to state that the Blaugrana could yet seek out a replay of the game.

And one individual who today showed little hesitation in siding with Sunday’s visitors to the Bernabéu comes in the form of Cafu.

Speaking whilst in attendance at the Laureus Sports Awards, Brazilian legend Cafu was drawn on the subject of Lamine’s ‘phantom goal’.

And the former AC Milan and Roma man was unwavering in his response:

“For me, Lamine Yamal’s goal in El Clásico is valid. You can see perfectly that the goalkeeper takes the ball out from inside [the goal]. It was a goal.”
