FC Barcelona had another very good game last night as they emerged 4-1 winners from the game against Girona. Lamine Yamal was the MVP for this match, as he scored the two opening goals in the first half to put the Blaugranes in the driving seat.
The other two goals for Barcelona were scored by Dani Olmo and Pedri. However, the former had to endure an injury in this match, but for the latter, it was a great night.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Pedri also spoke to the media after this game, and expressed his happiness with this result against a side as good as Girona:
“We are very happy with the result because it was a tough match. Girona plays good football with the ball, but we started well and with intensity. Lamine’s first goal comes from the pressure we apply, which is what the coach asks of us.”
The midfielder also revealed what Flick had told the team about having a good start to the season:
“We knew we had to start well; we didn’t do that in previous years. That’s what the coach told us, that we needed to start strong. He emphasizes how important it is to win the first games of the league, as that’s how you win league titles—by gaining a good points advantage at the beginning of the season.”
Pedri also opined on the two controversial moments from the match last night:
“I’ll need to see the play repeated, but I had a similar situation in Vallecas, and it wasn’t a red card. For the disallowed penalty, we told the referee that in the summer we were told that handballs don’t count if the ball is rebounded from a teammate. And that’s how it turned out.”
There is no doubt that gaining good ground over one’s competitors can help a team later in the season, and there is definitely much merit in Pedri’s words. Thus, while it is still only the early phase of the 2024-25 season, this good start to La Liga will definitely help Barcelona when things get tougher at the business end of the season.
