Fabio Cannavaro believes that Inter Milan are the favourites for the Serie A title this season – even if they lost to Napoli tomorrow.

The former Italian international spoke to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews.

Inter take on Napoli tomorrow evening in Serie A.

Heading into the match, the Partenopei are top of the table with 25 points. But the Nerazzurri are just one point behind them.

Therefore, Inter have the opportunity to go top of the table heading into the international break if they win.

A draw would keep Inter very much within touching distance. It could also give the opportunity to other teams like Atalanta and Juventus to make up ground.

But on the other hand, if Napoli are to pull off a win, they would give themselves a buffer at the top once again.

Fabio Cannavaro: “Inter Favourites For Serie A Even If They Lose To Napoli”

Clearly, three points tomorrow would be a huge statement of intent from Napoli in the title race.

Particularly after the Partenopei suffered a disappointing loss against Atalanta last weekend.

But it would hardly mean that Napoli had shaken off Inter altogether in the title race.

In the view of former defender Cannavaro, who had spells with both Inter and Napoli, “Inter are the overwhelming favourites” for the title.

“Even if they lose against Napoli.”

“Inter have great quality, both individually and as a team,” Cannavaro said.

“They have to win to overtake Napoli and project themselves towards the top of the table.”

“At the moment they’re the best-equipped team to win the title,” Cannavaro argued.

“But Napoli have to take advantage of one thing in particular,” he argued. “The other teams will be tired from the Champions League.”

And Cannavaro also gave his thoughts on the gap between Inter’s defensive record in Serie A and the Champions League.

“Today, defending is collective. It’s no longer individual defenders who make the errors.”

“In the Champions League there’s greater intensity,” Cannavaro argued. “Inter, maybe unconsciously, have more focus in the Champions League where they want to avoid slip-ups.”
