Vincent Kompany surprised many when he opted to start Raphaël Guerreiro ahead of Thomas Müller for Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Inter on Tuesday night. The Portugal international replaced Jamal Musiala who is sidelined for around eight weeks following a meniscus tear.
When questioned about his decision to start Guerreiro in the No. 10 position, Kompany said: “Rapha played in this position last time and scored two goals [against Bochum on MD25]. And earlier in the season, he was also important and scored a few goals, it’s a position he knows.”
The Belgian added: “He’ll give us something extra defensively too. Because the three Inter midfielders: Mkhitaryan, Calhanoglu, and Barella, are dangerous players. You always have to do what you think is important for the game.”
Kompany’s decision to start Guerreiro comes just days after it was announced that Müller would leave Bayern Munich upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season.
Bayern Munich had chances with the tie level at 0-0 but Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring for Inter with a sublime finish with the outside of his foot. Müller then equalised but a late Davide Frattesi goal then secured a win for the travelling Italians ahead of the return leg next week.
