Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim responded to transfer rumours that have been circling in recent weeks, linking club captain Bruno Fernandes with a move away from Old Trafford.

The midfielder, who signed for the Red Devils in 2020 and has become a crucial part of the side ever since, is reportedly a key summer target for Al-Hilal. The Saudi Pro League side are preparing a bid in excess of £115m, reports suggest, and are hoping that the opportunity to link up with Portuguese internationals João Cancelo and Ruben Neves could tempt the 30-year-old.

Ahead of Manchester United’s UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club, Amorim responded to the rumours and insisted that it is “easy to understand” why clubs are interested in the midfielder.

“Not just because of the numbers,” the United boss explained, “but the way he plays. He’s a top player and we need top players.”

“He’s a leader, the captain. It’s natural that people want Bruno – but we want to keep him. He’s one of the top players in the world,” Amorim told the media on Wednesday.

Bruno Fernandes has two years remaining on his Manchester United contract and is not believed to have responded to any offer from Al-Hilal.
