Southampton have not yet discussed their January transfer window plan under new manager Ivan Juric. However, they might struggle for one reason.
Southampton are a laughing stock at the moment. Everything the Saints touch turns into coal. Recently described by The Mirror as "comically inept", this season must have been a wake-up call to the Southampton owners.
Naturally, the attention has turned to the January transfer window, which has been open for close to a week now. Despite the window being open, Southampton haven't made any additions, nor have they even planned their potential additions.
Ivan Juric spoke rather openly about this to the media but he was running on little to no information.
According to a report from Alfie House of the Daily Echo, Ivan Juric is aware that Southampton currently have too many players. Therefore, Juric has implied this might have to be his priority, before any new additions are made.
Furthermore, Southampton have not even had a meeting to discuss which players to bring in. Their first meeting of this kind is expected on Tuesday, with a week of the transfer window being opened.
In his own words, Ivan Juric said: "No , we will have a meeting next week and then we will decide what to do. Now we have too many players, we have to give them and then start thinking about maybe bringing somebody in."
That was before the game, by which Southampton were humiliated by a 0-5 scoreline at home. After the match, Juric was pressed again, to which he responded: "We will speak on Tuesday and then see everything we can do."
So, Southampton fans must not expect a quick turnaround in the January transfer window. If Juric's open comments are anything to go by, then Southampton will carry out their business later than it would probably benefit them the most.
Reading between the lines here, the mentality at Southampton is very much "we're going to be relegated anyway, so what's the point?"
Let's hope I'm proven wrong and some good additions are made but the situation right now is not promising. This is a multimillion pound club we're talking about here.
