Brentford striker Ivan Toney has told friends he wants to join Manchester United, according to a new report.

The England man is widely expected to leave the Bees this summer as his contract expires in a year’s time and he has not signed an extension despite repeated offers.

It makes sense for both the club and the player to move him on now, at the prime age of 28, rather than wait a year. However, the London club, who once valued him at £90 million, have to be much more realistic in their asking price in a very deflated market.

There have been few serious reports about Toney’s next move while Euro 24 has been progressing, but his exit is expected to gather speed now.

As HITC reports, “Toney has been looked at closely by the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Manchester United, but as yet, nobody has been willing to step up.”

In fact, it was reported yesterday that having signed Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, United are unlikely to pursue a deal for Toney unless significant player sales are made.

It is perhaps this last report that has inspired Toney to try to issue a subtle “come and get me” plea to the Red Devils.

According to Football Insider’s sources, “Toney has told friends he’s keen to join Man United this summer.”

The outlet furthermore claims that “the 28-year-old striker has also shared the same sentiment with his England teammates while away on international duty this summer.”

Adding two strikers to the first team squad rather than one would be a tremendous boost for United, especially after last season saw the club’s forwards struggle to find the back of the net.

However, part-owners Ineos may consider that other areas of the pitch are now more of a priority. At least one central midfielder and a full back are expected to be targeted.

Football insider reports that Toney is now available for £60 million, which is still a considerable outlay despite being two thirds of last year’s price tag.

The player’s desire to join United could certainly help the situation, though, and if a deal can be structured that does not weigh too heavily on United’s PSR commitments, it might be too good an opportunity for the Red Devils to pass up.
