Leyton Orient have plenty of work to do in the summer transfer window if they are to improve on their 11th place finish in League One last season.

Key players Idris El Mizouni, Shaq Forde and Sol Brynn have returned to their parent clubs after successful loan spells.

These will need to be replaced, while further additions are necessary if the O's have ambitions of reaching the play-offs.

The East London club struggled at times last season due to a lack of squad depth and manager Richie Wellens will be keen to ensure that history doesn't repeat itself.

With that in mind, we take a look at a couple of deals that could trigger the dream start to the window.

In: Jack Nolan

Last summer, Leyton Orient signed forward Daniel Agyei from Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer.

Agyei was the joint-fifth highest goalscorer in League Two in the 2022-23 season, so it made perfect sense for Orient to make a move.

With the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Barnsley having far bigger budgets, it is difficult for teams like the O's to attract proven League One talent.

Instead, they will often give opportunities to players that have excelled in the lower divisions. Agyei was a prime example of this and Accrington Stanley's Jack Nolan could be another.

Nolan was one of the top 10 goalscorers in League Two last season (17), while he was also in the top 15 for assists (eight). For a 22-year-old left-winger playing for a bottom-half team, those are ridiculous numbers.

He has been offered a new contract by the 'Owd Reds, but it seems highly unlikely that he will be plying his trade at the Crown Ground come August.

There have been no reports linking Nolan with the O's yet, but he is exactly the sort of young and hungry player that would suit Wellens' project.

Out: Joe Pigott

As previously mentioned, signing League One-proven players is a challenge for teams like the O's, so the addition of Joe Pigott was initially viewed as a shrewd piece of business by the East London club.

However, the former Ipswich Town man could only muster up four goals in a very disappointing debut campaign at the Gaughan Group Stadium.

He became so out of favour towards the end of the campaign that even young loanees Dan Adu-Adjei and Khayon Edwards were given more minutes.

So, it came as no surprise to hear Wellens reveal that Pigott would be allowed to leave in the forthcoming transfer window.

The striker's contract does not expire until 2025, having signed a two-year deal last summer, but it would appear that he has already played his last game for the O's.

With Orient keen to get Pigott off the wage bill, one would assume that they will not look for a transfer fee and that he will be allowed to join any potential suitor for free.

And, the sooner they achieve this, the sooner they can spend the savings on a new signing, such as Nolan, potentially.
