Mexican national team head coach Jaime Lozano named the 26-player roster for the Nations League Matches against Honduras, with Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez and West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez headlining the squad.
El Tricolor will travel to Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Honduras for the first match on November 17, before hosting the Concacaf opponents at the Estadio Azteca just three days later. Mexico must win the series to qualify for the semifinals and earn a coveted spot in the 2024 Copa America.
Colombian-born figure Julian Quiñones will be looking to earn his national team debut, after joining the roster for the first time since becoming a naturalized Mexican citizen in October. The winger first arrived to Mexico in 2016 to feature for Tigres’ youth teams, and has since played his entire professional club career in the country.
Though Quiñones previously featured for Colombia’s youth international teams, he never appeared at the senior level to make him eligible for Mexico.
"Any player with Mexican nationality, the soccer skills and the desire to represent Mexico may be considered for our National Teams. There are no 'first-class Mexicans', nor 'second-class Mexicans'. We are all MEXICANS. As an institution, we want to conclude the debate around naturalized soccer players," said the Mexican Football Federation in a statement after announcing Quiñones’ inclusion in the latest roster.
