Jamie Paterson won his fair share of congratulations online following a stoppage-time winner for the history books
Coventry attacker Jamie Paterson has taken to social media to celebrate netting an emotional stoppage-time winner against Portsmouth on Wednesday night.
The 33-year-old signed for the Sky Blues, his boyhood club, in February as a free agent following his release from Charlotte FC earlier in the year.
He earned his side all three points in the dying seconds of the game with a sublime volley, before sprinting over to celebrate with fans.
Naturally, he turned to Instagram the day after to mark the occasion, and was met with congratulations from stars from both inside and out of the football world.
Posting three images of his celebration, Paterson said: “Just as I dreamt it as a kid 🥹 Sausage Batch this morning to celebrate. Living the dream 👊🏼🩵”
The top comment on the post comes from current Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison, who replied: “Unreal mate!!! PUSB🩵”
Maddison has a deep association with the Sky Blues, having been born in the city and starting his career there as a youngster.
Posting on his X account last year, Maddison said: “Home is where the heart is. I’m so proud and privileged to be a Coventry City academy graduate. As I’ve got older I’ve realised how much Coventry actually means to me. My place of birth and my whole childhood into early adult life.”
With Paterson having the added element of being a boyhood Coventry fan, Maddison can likely only imagine how much the goal means.
Predictably, in the replies to Maddison’s Instagram comment, more than one suggested a homecoming should one day be on the cards.
Music star Tom Zanetti also popped up to throw praise Paterson’s way, saying: “Absolute boy ☑️👑”
Plymouth Argyle striker Michael Obafemi, on loan from Burnley, show his support, typing: “Easyyyy naaaaa.”
They were joined by Leicester City’s Bobby De Cordova-Reid, former Premier League winner Danny Simpson and Derby County’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, among many others, marking the achievement.
The context behind the goal and knowing how much it meant to Paterson, gave his friends and supporters plenty to shout about.
Given his love for the club, and him having his wish to play for the Sky Blues granted at the tail-end of his career, any Paterson goal was going to feel special.
But given that it came in the final seconds of a game, to win all three points from what was otherwise destined for stalemate, makes it even better.
Not only that, but the win shunted Coventry back into the play-off places as the final handful of games approach; goals won’t come much sweeter for Sky Blues fans.
Even if Paterson doesn’t make a single other contribution in his time at the CBS Arena, that moment will remain unforgettable and makes the move worthwhile on its own.
It’s little wonder the praise came in so strong for the forward in his social media post.
