James Ward-Prowse gave “taking one for the team” a new definition with one of the most obscure Premier League sendings-off against Chelsea.
The West Ham loanee had been booked in the first-half before being given his marching orders in the 78th minute in comical fashion.
His touch when receiving the ball was poor, allowing Nicolas Jackson to nick the ball and scoot clear. Knowing he didn’t have the pace to catch the Chelsea striker, Ward-Prowse resorted to diving to grab the ball like a rugby player.
Unsurprisingly he was sent off, but only for a second yellow, when a red for denying a goal scoring opportunity and a blatant handball might have been more appropriate.
Either way, it made for one of the funnier red cards in Premier League history.
