It was a case of cometh (nearly) the hour, cometh the man for Leicester City against Tottenham as Jamie Vardy grabbed an equaliser completely against the run of play.

It continued the 37-year-old’s remarkable Premier League record, with the Foxes captain now having scored eight Premier League opening day goals.

Vardy missed much of pre-season with injury but declared himself fit to start tonight in the knowledge that new manager Steve Cooper had no other recognised striker in his squad.

Maybe he knew he’d probably score too, based purely on seven other opening-day goals.

Only Mohamed Salah (nine goals) has now scored more times than Vardy on the opening day, who is now level with Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer.

He might be ageing like a fine wine, but it was another drink associated with him that he gulped at halftime ahead of a big 45 for his side. It seemingly worked too.

An iconic return to the Premier League for an iconic player.
