Newcastle United may find itself at the center of a captivating managerial twist as reports suggest that Jose Mourinho, the charismatic and seasoned coach, has shown interest in taking charge at St. James’ Park should Eddie Howe’s tenure come to an end.

Known for his tactical acumen and larger-than-life personality, Mourinho currently leads Fenerbahçe in Turkey but is reportedly eyeing a comeback to the Premier League.

Mourinho eyeing Premier League return with Newcastle United

According to The Guardian, Mourinho views Newcastle as the ideal setting for his return, drawn by the club’s ambitious trajectory and the allure of unfinished business in England. The report claims that the Portuguese manager has reached out to the intermediaries, asking them to keep an eye on the situation surrounding Eddie Howe’s future.

While Mourinho has been at Fenerbahçe since the summer, his experience has not been entirely smooth.

Despite a recent 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor, he went on an extraordinary rant to express frustration with the Turkish league, citing its limited visibility on the European stage.

Despite his occasional discontent, the 61-year-old maintains a public commitment to his current role, even as he remains intrigued by new challenges.

At present, Eddie Howe’s position at Newcastle is secure and well-regarded. Appointed in November 2021 as a replacement for Steve Bruce, Howe quickly made an impact by steering the club away from relegation and finishing the season in mid-table.

His accomplishments include guiding Newcastle to their first Champions League berth in over two decades and leading the team to the 2023 EFL Cup final.

Newcastle’s return to the Champions League included impressive moments, notably a 4-1 victory over PSG, though they ultimately finished last in their group.

Howe’s successes have strengthened his status, yet the mention of Mourinho’s interest could create added scrutiny if the team’s form falters.

Adding to the speculation, reports have emerged about a potential Tottenham investment from former Newcastle director Amanda Staveley. Should the deal go through, Staveley reportedly favours bringing Eddie Howe to Spurs as replacement to Ange Postecoglou, which would potentially open the door for Mourinho at Newcastle.

While Mourinho’s interest signals Newcastle’s growing reputation as a Premier League heavyweight, the club remains firmly behind Howe’s long-term project to secure domestic and European success.

In addition to Newcastle, West Ham has also been linked to Mourinho following the poor start by Julen Lopetegui, though they have been warned against appointing him.

For now, Newcastle fans can expect continued support for Howe, but Mourinho’s shadow looms large, ready to ignite intrigue should the managerial landscape shift.
