Journalist reveals Chelsea’s stance on Malo Gusto with summer plans for full-back explained

Chelsea are ready to offer Frenchman Malo Gusto a new contract according to reports despite an underwhelming season.
Gusto joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023 from French side Lyon in a deal worth an initial £26.3m, with the Blues getting the move wrapped up that January.
The 21-year-old excelled last season under Mauricio Pochettino and featured far more regularly than he would have expected given Reece James’ injury issues.
Things have been more difficult for Gusto this season and he’s struggled in Enzo Maresca’s system where the full back inverts into midfield, and he’s found himself popping up in the number ten position at times.
Gusto thrived as an overlapping fullback last season, but Maresca doesn’t use the fullback in that way, with this clearly having an impact.
The right back has had good games this season, and perhaps with a years experience under his belt he will understand the system better and what’s expected of him.

Despite a difficult season journalist Graeme Bailey has claimed he’s convinced Gusto will be offered a new deal by Chelsea, and recently he changed his agents.
“He’s proven he is a huge part of the squad. I firmly believe that will get done [contract extension]. It’s too far to say he’s essential, but they’d struggle if he wasn’t there,” he told The Chelsea Chronicle.
“The right-back situation is interesting. Do we see another one come in? I still think we do see a full-back come in. Let’s keep an eye on that, but I do expect Gusto’s new deal soon.”

Gusto has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season, and if an extension is signed you would think it would be similar to what Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson signed last year which tied them down at the club until 2033.
Despite Gusto’s form you could argue when fully fit and playing at their best the Blues have two of the best right backs in Europe, both at a great age and ready to contribute for many years to come.
