Premiership giants Celtic suffered a gutting defeat at the hands of European heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain tonight, as the Ligue 1 club came away with a comfortable 4-0 victory. The closest that the visitors came was when a Christopher Jullien header smashed against the post in the first half. As soon as Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring within the first minute, the trend of the fixture was set. Further goals from Neymar, Ander Herrera and Pablo Sarabia ensured that the Parisians came away the happier side, from what was an extremely interesting ninety minutes of football.
The shot-stopper made a couple of smart saves to limit PSG tonight but probably should’ve got a firmer hand on Herrera’s drive. Fortunately for him, the Ligue 1 outfit were lacking the final ball.
The centre-half was positioned on the same side as both Neymar and Mbappe tonight, and he was the victim of a majority of their creativity. Far from his most comfortable outing in a Celtic shirt.
The Frenchman used this defeat to PSG to highlight just how much quality he actually has. Despite the goals, Jullien hit the PSG post in the first-half and made many important defensive contributions as well.
Ajer was given a torrid time at the back by the likes of Mbappe and Icardi but held his own during one-on-one situations. Made a couple of decent clearances and maintained the line well.
Considering that he was up against both Mbappe and Neymar down that end, it’s safe to say that the youngster did a solid job tonight. Made some good tackles at the back and got forward too.
The Scot tried really hard to be the Celts’ out-ball tonight on multiple occasions but wasn’t able to impact the tie in the final third. Played some decent long passes, but got overrun very easily.
The Frenchman played a flurry of loose passes in the first half and was caught in possession on a couple of instances as well. Took too much time on the ball and was easily surpassed every time.
The midfielder didn’t have the most influential of outings in the core of the team tonight as he was continually pushed back by the waves of PSG attacks. Made a few good passes, but looked ineffective.
The full-back tried to get forward on every opportunity but wasn’t allowed too much time on the ball. Made a couple of important interceptions at the back and passed the ball around with confidence.
The Southampton loanee picked up some good positions in the final third but failed to link up efficiently enough with Edouard in the attack. He was forced to track back and defend quite a bit as well.
The Frenchman had a couple of decent moments in attack over the course of the ninety but was an isolated figure for large chunks of the fixture. Didn’t have the impact he might’ve been hoping for.
The speedster was brought into the side in the second half in place of Bitton, in what meant a change in formation for the visitors. He had a couple a good shots at goal but wasn’t able to find the net.
The youngster impressed once again after coming on as he gave the PSG defenders a much harder time than they had against Edouard. Used his strength well and tried to make something happen himself.
