Post-match reaction following 2-0 loss against FC Augsburg

SV Werder Bremen were left empty-handed after a 2-0 defeat on Bundesliga matchday 18. The Green-Whites were visibly disappointed with the result, having hoped for a much different start to the second half of the season. WERDER.DE have summed up all the key quotes following the game.

Ole Werner, head coach: “The more clinical side won. We had set out to do certain things – create space for ourselves, avoid errors in possession and attack with purpose – and we didn’t put them into action. A decisive factor, however, is how you make the most of your opportunities inside the box, and that’s where Augsburg were more clinical and better than us. That’s why we’ve deservedly lost a game which we shouldn’t have lost based on the possession stats. The difference between now and December is that we haven’t been playing with the same precision, focus and quality in front of goal.”

Marco Friedl, captain: “Overall, we put in a decent performance. We just haven’t managed to keep our shape over the last few games. It feels like every time the ball is inside our box, we concede, and we’re also missing a bit of luck in front of goal. It’s just not enough to win games. Our main focus for the coming weeks has to be on our defence, because our games will only get tougher.”

Niklas Stark: “It wasn’t a bad game from us, but we lacked the ability to finish our chances and didn’t generate enough pressure. It’s obviously tough to once again concede out of nowhere. We need to make sure that we’re more focused during those key moments. It’s important that we now remain focused on what we need to do, as well as staying positive and continuing to work hard.”

Marvin Ducksch: “We’ve put together three solid performances in the new year, but haven’t managed to win any of them. We need to figure out how to get back to playing to the best of our abilities, because simply playing well isn’t enough to pick up points. We all need to put in more effort in order to be more effective in and around the box, in order to reward ourselves with a win. [The referee’s] decision to overturn the red card isn’t the right call, in my opinion, because you can see that he makes enough contact to be able to take someone down at that speed. I don’t see it as a clear and obvious error.”

Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football: “We put in a good box-to-box performance tonight. We made far too many mistakes at the back and weren’t as clinical in front of goal as we have been in recent past. There were small details missing, such as the desire to do everything to defend our own goal, which is a criticism that we have to level at ourselves. We need to work hard and get to a point where it’s second nature to do these things in every game.”
