Juventus' European journey came to an end before reaching the round of 16 stage, as they lost 3-1 in extra time against PSV Eindhoven in the second leg of the play-off round and consequently exit the Champions League. After the 2-1 win in the first leg in Turin, the Bianconeri were pegged back by the Dutch side in the 90 minutes of regulation time, before going onto suffer the decisive blow in extra time. Ryan Flamingo scored the all-important goal in extra time to end the Bianconeri's hopes of progressing.
PSV got off to a strong start immediately, trying to set a high tempo in the match: the hosts came close in just the 2nd minute when they had a double chance in the Bianconeri's box, with both Jerdy Schouten and Luuk De Jong’s efforts blocked by the Juventus defence until the ball was eventually turned behind for a corner by Manuel Locatelli. The Dutch pressing made it difficult for the Bianconeri, who struggled play out from the back, but Thiago Motta's team remained compact and managed to repel their opponents' onslaughts.
Juventus were forced to make their first change 10 minutes into the match: Renato Veiga suffered a muscle injury and was replaced by Andrea Cambiaso, consequently re-shuffling the team's set-up. A few minutes later, in the 14th minute, Juve had their first real attack through Francisco Conceicao, doing well to win a corner after some excellent play down the right wing. At the other end, PSV came close to taking the lead in the 19th minute with a double chance: Noa Lang received the ball in the box and fired goalwards but was denied by the Bianconeri defence.
Juventus grew into the game as the match wore on and in the 17th minute they went close to taking the lead through Randal Kolo Muani, who got on the end of Timothy Weah's cross, but was unable to find the back of the net with his headed effort. On the half-hour mark it was again Juventus who posed a threat with Cambiaso, who drove into the penalty the area and shot, with this effort deflecting off Flamingo on its way to goal: Walter Benitez was alert to the danger and parried away. In the 32nd minute, it was PSV’s turn to threaten the Bianconeri goal with a dangerous cross from Lang, which Cambiaso managed to control and usher back to Michele Di Gregorio, thwarting the danger.
In the closing stages of the half the Bianconeri had another chance, the best of the match, in the 34th minute Teun Koopmeiners took advantage of Flamingo's mistake and found Kolo Muani, who was unable to capitalise from a favourable position. The last gasp chance of the half fell to Locatelli in the 44th minute, who tried to catch Benitez off guard with a shot from distance after an error by the goalkeeper, but his effort was too central and easily saved.
Juventus returned to the pitch with the aim of defending the lead they had gained in the first leg, but PSV immediately upped the tempo and increased the pressure. In the 48th minute, the Dutch side’s first effort came from Ivan Perisic, who controlled the ball in the area and shot, but Di Gregorio was on hand to deny him. The Juve goalkeeper was nearly called into action again shortly afterwards to deny Lang, whose first time effort only found the side netting.
PSV's pressure paid off in the 54th minute, when Lang drove inside from the left and played a perfect through ball for Perisic, who expertly controlled the ball and beat Di Gregorio with a powerful strike across goal to make it 1-0 to the Dutch team. The former Inter man proved to be his team’s most dangerous threat, while Juventus struggled to react and suffered under the hosts’ continuous pressure.
In the 60th minute Peter Bosz's team came close to doubling their lead: Ismael Saibari tried an effort from distance, but the strike was blocked by Federico Gatti, who also got in the way of Joey Veerman's subsequent attempt. The Bianconeri were in difficulty and could not contain their opponent’s advances.
In the most difficult phase of the game, Juventus found a vital goal in the 63rd minute from Timothy Weah. The talented American let off a shot from the distance that caught Benitez off guard and hit the back of the net. The referee initially disallowed the goal due to Lloyd Kelly's offside position, but after a VAR check the goal was awarded: 1-1 and Juventus were back in the game.
The equaliser seemed to give the Bianconeri a new lease of life, but in the 74th minute PSV retook the lead through Saibari. Again, the move started with Perisic breaking down the right and playing a clever pass to De Jong. The striker was thwarted by Gatti, but the ball ended up at the feet of Saibari, who fired his effort under the crossbar from close range and put the hosts ahead. VAR confirmed the goal.
In the closing stages, PSV tried to find the winner in the six minutes of added time, but Juventus' defence held firm, taking the game to extra time. Now the Bianconeri would have to find the energy to react and try to win qualification for the Champions League round of 16.
After their 2-1 win in regulation time, PSV started strongly in extra time, immediately creating a chance for Saibari in the 92nd minute, but Di Gregorio did well to deny him. Juventus tried to resist, but in the 97th minute the decisive goal arrived: Johan Bakayoko got on the end of a free-kick on the right and crossed into the centre. After a rebound between Di Gregorio and Gatti, Flamingo found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
Juventus were stunned, while PSV managed the game. In the 100th minute Kenan Yildiz was cautioned for simulation, while shortly afterwards Nicolo Savona came close with a header from Samuel Mbangula's cross. Benitez, however, was alert to the danger and parried the effort away.
Juve had a great chance at the end of the first half of extra time: on 105'+1 Mbangula delivered a perfect cross into the area for Dusan Vlahovic, who, from close range, hit the post, as Juve missed out on the goal that would have got them back into the match.
In the second half of extra time Juventus struggled to create chances, with PSV lowering the tempo of the game and defending strongly: Juve threatened in 113th minute with a strike from Khephren Thuram which went high over the crossbar, but the last chance of the game came in the 120th minute and fell at the feet of Guus Til, who was played through one-on-one with Di Gregorio, but the goalkeeper prevented him from making it 4-1 with a great save. In the final three minutes of added time, Juventus launched one last desperate assault, but PSV stood firm and celebrated qualification to the Round of 16 at the final whistle.
This is how Juventus' European adventure came to an end: they sadly say goodbye to the Champions League.
