Saarbrücken’s stunning DFB-Pokal run came to an end Tuesday evening, suffering defeat in the semi-final to Zweiteliga side FC Kaiserslautern.
Scorers: Ritter 53′, Touré 75′
Despite Saarbrücken seeing less of the ball in the opening 45 minutes, the hosts were on top of Kaiserslautern from the opening whistle.
The visitors did not muster a single shot before the break, never mind a shot on target. Meanwhile, Rüdiger Ziehl will have felt unlucky to have not snatched the lead.
The trajectory of the tie was flipped shortly after the halftime restart however, as Kaiserslautern snatched the lead with their first shot on target through Marlon Ritter.
Saarbrücken regained control after opener, but failed to breakdown the visitors’ staunch rearguard.
Any hopes of a turnaround were dashed in the final 15 minutes however, as Almamy Touré snatched Kaiserslautern’s second of the night.
The Red Devils will now await the winner of Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Düsseldorf’s semi-final showdown on Wednesday.
