Germany forward Klara Buhl has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss her country’s Euro 2022 semi-final against France on Wednesday night.

Buhl, who has started all four of Germany’s games so far across the group stage and quarter-finals, is the only member of the squad or support staff to test positive.

The 21-year-old is currently in isolation but is not currently displaying any symptoms.

There is likely to be opportunity for impressive teenager Jule Brand to replace Buhl in the starting linuep, having come on as a substitute in each of Germany’s games so far.

Germany are seeking to reach a ninth European Championship final. The record eight-time former champions won six consecutive tournaments from 1995 to 2013 but were surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-finals last time in 2017.

They also underwhelmed at the 2019 World Cup, falling at the quarter-final stage despite winning each of their first four games, which in turn denied them a place at the 2020 Olympics.

But this summer’s German side has impressed, arguably coming into the competition slightly under the radar to begin with because of their successive quarter-final exits in recent years and the hype surrounding the likes of Sweden, Spain, England and France.

Germany have beaten Denmark, Spain, Finland and Austria so far, scoring 11 times and keeping four consecutive clean sheets. France, however, will be their biggest test yet.
