Uncertainty Over Konate’s Future at Liverpool

Ibrahima Konate has confirmed that Liverpool have offered him a new contract, yet the French defender remains non-committal about signing an extension. His current deal runs until the summer of 2026, but negotiations appear to be far from a resolution.

Having joined the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million, Konate has established himself as a key figure in Liverpool’s defensive line. With 112 appearances to his name, he has become Virgil van Dijk’s preferred centre-back partner. Under the guidance of Arne Slot, the 25-year-old has regained his place in the starting XI following a knee injury layoff, with the Dutch coach making it clear that Konate is a guaranteed starter when fit.

Contract Talks in Motion but No Clarity

Liverpool are also in discussions over new deals for Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah, with all three facing contract expirations at the end of the season. However, Konate’s situation has added another layer of uncertainty to the club’s plans.

When asked about his contract situation, Konate appeared to downplay any imminent agreement.

“Who talked about that a few months ago?” he responded. “The club didn’t say anything, I didn’t say anything. It’s one person who said that.”

His remarks suggest that while an offer is on the table, discussions are not progressing at a rapid pace. He further elaborated on his stance: “I was not ready, I didn’t know when he said that. But after, I spoke with the club. I think I am really focussed on what happens now. We will see what will happen.”

Will Konate Commit to a New Liverpool Deal?

The defender confirmed that Liverpool have made an offer but stopped short of saying he was close to signing. “Yes (I have been offered a deal). This is another conversation (whether I am close to signing).”

Konate’s performances this season have been impressive, featuring in 22 matches, scoring twice, and providing one assist. He was on media duties on Monday and is expected to retain his place in Liverpool’s lineup for Tuesday night’s Champions League clash with Lille.

With Liverpool looking to secure the long-term futures of their defensive stalwarts, Konate’s contract talks will be one to watch closely in the coming months.
