The USA Women’s National Team secured a late win over 10-player Mexico to finish with three wins from three games in the Concacaf W Championship Group A.
Scorers: K Mewis 89′
The game was played in 36C (97F) heat at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, but it had little effect on the players during what was a physical encounter.
USA attacker Margaret Purce came closed to breaking the deadlock in the first half when her shot on the quarter-hour mark bounced back off the upright.
Mexico were dealt a critical blow in the 73rd minute when a VAR review saw substitute Lizbeth Ovalle dismissed for a late and crunching tackle that caught USA midfielder Rose Lavelle on the ankle.
The Stars and Stripes dominated in terms of possession and territory, but they couldn’t find a way past Mexico goalkeeper Itzel González who produced an inspired performance between the posts.
It looked like La Tri would earn a morale-boosting draw until a minute from time when Kristie Mewis bundled home the rebound after González had just about managed to keep out Emily Sonnett’s initial header.
The USA will now play Costa Rica in the semi-finals, while Jamaica (who overcame Haiti 4-0) will meet Canada on the other side of the draw.
