Latest: Enzo Maresca’s injury update on Malo Gusto, Marc Guiu and Romeo Lavia

Chelsea have another colossal 3 points up for grabs this weekend as they take on Everton in tomorrow’s early kick off, and Enzo Maresca has just taken his press conference ahead of the game.
First up, as ever, was injury news, and while there was no new bad news, there was also no new good news. Malo Gusto limped off injured in our game last week having only come on as a sub, so the the first question was about him:
“Malo is injured but it does not look like an important injury. He is running and doing things outside but he won’t be available for tomorrow,” Maresca said.
That’s promising compared to expectations – we can handle him out for tomorrow as Reece James can play. We just need him back for one of the games next week so that James doesn’t have to play 3 games in 2 weeks. By the sounds of things, Gusto could certainly be back for next weekend, if not next Thursday’s Conference League semi final first leg.

Maresca also had updates on some of the lesser names in the squad:
“Marc Guiu is still out, Aaron Anselmino is still out but the rest are still fit. Hopefully Marc can be back in one or two weeks.”
Guiu is important as Nicolas Jackson’s backup, but Tyrique George has been filling that role well in recent weeks, and we can survive without him. Anselmino has yet to play for a minute for us and is about 20th in the centre back pecking order, so not great loss there either.
On Romeo Lavia, Maresca confirmed he was almost ready and would be managed very carefully, as James is:
“He is back, training with us. With Romeo, we are trying the same thing we are trying with Reece James. We need to use them step by step. With Reece it is working quite well.”
