Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella has emerged as a potential transfer target for runaway Premier League leaders Arsenal heading into the summer. Gazzetta dello Sport recently detailed how Lazio’s financial situation could force the club to sell their prized asset.
Despite signing Rovella from Juventus only last summer, Lazio may need to offload the 23-year-old in the coming months. Though reluctantly, Marco Baroni’s side may have no other option unless they lock down a top-four finish in Serie A amid an intense run-in.
Bodo/Glimt proved the Italians’ scourge in the Europa League, leaving Lazio with only a top-four finish left to play for down the final stretch. The Bianconcelesti forked out around €50 million on signings in the past two transfer windows, hoping it would pay off through European qualification.
However, anything other than a sought-after Champions League berth would probably put Lazio in a rough position. Rovella could fall victim to the club’s need for cash, with Liverpool joining a long queue of teams interested in luring him away from Stadio Olimpico.
Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi sits atop the Reds’ shopping list. Yet, the highly-rated Spaniard turned down a move to Anfield last summer out of loyalty for the San Sebastian outfit. Therefore, Arne Slot’s men have compiled a backup list, featuring Rovella’s name close to the top.
Though Rovella never had a chance to prove his quality at Juventus, he has blossomed at Lazio. Numbers don’t lie. He has been outstanding on both ends of the pitch, mustering an impressive pass-completion ratio of 89.3% while boasting an eye-catching 86% tackle success rate.
