Cristiano Ronaldo might have had the last laugh on the night as Portugal won 5-2 against Denmark. But Celtic goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, had his moment as well. The home side were handed a penalty kick very early on the in the game. And most expected the ball to find its way to the back of the net from the spot.
After all, that is what we have seen happen for over two decades, when Ronaldo takes a penalty. This time around, the story was very different though.
It was an uncharacteristically weak effort from Ronaldo. Schmeichel guessed right and did not have much trouble saving the spot kick.
Of course, football fans were going to have their say on Ronaldo's miss on social media. And that is exactly what they did.
Well, Ronaldo did show that he still has a bit of football left in him, scoring against Denmark on the night. But it is very true that he looks like a shadow of himself these days.
That has been the case for a while now, to be honest. Going back to his second stint at Manchester United.
The 2022 World Cup was one to forget for Ronaldo, as he was benched midway through the tournament. And while he played consistently at the EUROs, his performances left a lot to be desired and many felt that he was holding the Portugal team back rather than helping them compete.
Of course, Celtic fans will have been delighted to see Schmeichel save Ronaldo's penalty kick. Unfortunately, Denmark did not have enough in the tank to keep Portugal at bay and ultimately ended up losing the tie on aggregate. But the goalkeeper continues to show that even at this point in his career, he can deliver.
