Leeds United are eyeing a move for Liverpool youngster Calvin Ramsay this January.
According to the print edition Daily Mail (18/01, page 69), the Whites have shortlisted the right-back as a potential signing this month as they eye defensive reinforcement.
Leeds are looking a little light at the back at the moment, especially with the departures of Luke Ayling and Djed Spence.
This has left Daniel Farke with very few options on either flank, with the club planning moves before the 1 February deadline.
The Yorkshire outfit will want to beef up their first team squad for a promotion push in the remainder of the Championship campaign.
Ramsay spent the first half of this season out on loan with Preston North End, where he featured just twice.
The defender struggled for game time in Ryan Lowe’s side, leading to his return to Anfield.
The Premier League side recalled the full-back, and could now loan him out again this January.
Leeds have been linked with a number of potential signings this month, but have yet to make any additions.
Farke will be keen to strengthen before the window closes, with the team eyeing a top two spot in the division.
Ramsay missed four months of this campaign with injury, which didn’t help his attempts to break into the starting lineup at Deepdale.
Liverpool instead opted to bring the player back to the club, meaning he could have a fresh start somewhere else for 2024.
Archie Gray has stepped into the role as right-back as Leeds continue to struggle for alternatives in that position.
The 17-year-old has proven his versatility, having initially shone while playing in midfield.
This has been a boost to Farke, who has trusted the teenager to become a key part of the team at such a young age.
Leeds are currently fourth in the Championship table, seven points adrift of the play-off places.
The gap to Southampton in third is four points, with both sides hoping to chase down Ipswich Town in second.
League leaders Leicester City are a further seven points clear of the Tractor Boys, meaning the three clubs are likely only fighting for one automatic promotion place.
Farke’s team maintained their pace with their rivals last weekend with a 3-0 win away to Cardiff City.
Next up for Leeds is a home game against Preston on 21 January.
Leeds need some extra defensive cover this month, otherwise they could struggle to maintain a healthy squad balance in the second half of the term.
Relying on Gray for heavy minutes at right-back would be a tough ask given his age and lack of experience.
Bringing in someone like Ramsay would be a short-term solution as it would likely only be a loan deal for the rest of the season.
The 20-year-old was unable to showcase his best work at Preston, but the Liverpool youngster still has potential to be a solid addition to Farke’s side.
