Honourable mentions

Worth mentioning too are seven other wingers who will be well known to many City fans:

Welsh international Mal Griffiths played 409 games for Leicester between 1938 and 1956 scoring an impressive 76 goals. The right winger moved from Arsenal in search of first team football which he got at Filbert Street which he graced for 11 seasons, two of them in the top-flight. Mal’s main claim to fame is that he scored Leicester’s first ever Wembley goal in a losing side in the 1949 FA Cup final (see YouTube clip).

John Farrington played 146 times for Leicester between 1969-73 scoring 27 goals. Signed by Frank O’Farrell from Wolves for £30,000, the right winger was easily recognisable by his shoulder length straight hair. He was a key player in Leicester’s Second Division championship winning team in 1971, although he turned out less often for Jimmy Bloomfield’s Foxes side in Division 1 before, in 1973, he was signed by O’Farrell again this time for Cardiff City in Division Two before spending six years at Northampton Town.

Signed by Nigel Pearson from MK Dons, the quick and direct left-winger Lloyd Dyer played 265 games for the Foxes between 2008 and 2014 scoring 39 goals. He starred in the side that won the League One title in 2008/9 and was a staple member of the Foxes’ Championship sides for five seasons, picking up a winner’s medal following promotion to the Premier League in 2014. Despite being offered an extension to his deal at the King Power Stadium, Lloyd joined Watford in the summer of 2014 but struggled to make an impact at Vicarage Road. Burnley, Burton (twice) and Bolton followed.

Anthony Knockaert was signed by Nigel Pearson in 2012. He played 106 games for Leicester scoring 16 goals in his three years with the club. Anthony was a regular starter in the Championship title-winning side in the 2013/14 season. The tricky and skilful little French winger moved on at the end of the ‘great escape’ season when it was clear that his appearances would be few and far between due to the emergence of Riyad Mahrez.

Left winger Danny Liddle played 247 games for the Foxes between 1932 and 1946 scoring 71 goals. He was the star player in a Leicester team often struggling at the wrong end of the First Division

Bought from Dunfermline, Jackie Sinclair made 113 appearances for Leicester between 1965 and 1967 scoring an impressive 53 goals, top scoring in his first two seasons with the club with 24 and 22 goals respectively. He was a pacy right winger apt to cutting inside and unleashing a ferocious and accurate shot. He had a great partnership with centre forward Derek Dougan. He was sold, surprisingly and prematurely - much to the anger of the fans - to Newcastle in 1967, where he won the UEFA Fairs Cup in 1969. Tommy Wright was his cousin. He died of cancer at the age of 67 in 2010.

Finally, mention should also be made of Tommy Wright. A fans’ favourite for his committed approach, the left winger made 151 appearances for the club in three virtually ever-present Second Division seasons between 1989 and 1992, scoring 29 goals.
