Sékou Mara (22) had been one of the few bright sparks in FC Girondins de Bordeaux’s ill-fated 2021/22 campaign that saw the club relegated from Ligue 1 for the first time in their history. His performances leading the line had earned him a move to Southampton FC, where Mara has struggled to live up to his huge potential.
Last winter there were rumours linking Mara with a return to Ligue 1 where his stock has not yet fallen despite his troubles in the south of England. Lille OSC and Olympique de Marseille were reportedly interested in the forward. However, Mara remained at the Championship club as they secured promotion back to the Premier League.
The links with a return to France have not lessened with Foot Mercato reporting RC Lens and RC Strasbourg Alsace want to take advantage of Southampton’s current position of being open to a departure. Lens in particular consider Mara a replacement for the outgoing Elye Wahi (21) whose move to Marseille has just been agreed.
