After suffering 18 Clasico defeats, Real Madrid ended their long wait for a win over rivals Barcelona in Sunday’s dramatic clash in Liga F. The 3-1 win was not without controversy, as Las Blancas moved to within four points of leaders Barcelona.
Here, we will round up all the latest action from Liga F.
Eibar required just one goal to take maximum points from Saturday’s meeting with Betis. Carmen Álvarez produced the decisive strike against her former club. Álvarez, who left Betis in January, poked the ball past Paula Vizoso after she made the run in behind to latch onto Mariana Cerro’s through pass.
Eibar held on to their narrow lead for the remainder of the match to clinch a third consecutive 1-0 victory. As for Betis, they remain in the bottom two after losing three of their last four games.
Dépor and Tenerife had to settle for a point in Saturday’s meeting at Riazor. The hosts registered four shots on target, while the visitors mustered three efforts on goal. However, neither side were able to find the elusive breakthrough, ensuring the contest finished in a goalless draw. The result leaves both teams without a win in five Liga F matches.
Athletic Club continued their top three push with a narrow win over Levante Badalona. Substitute Irene Oguiza netted the winning goal in the 73rd minute. The 25-year-old hooked the ball home from Maitane Vilariño’s cross to net her third league goal of the season.
Athletic saw out the remainder of the contest to clinch a sixth consecutive away win in Liga F. As a result, they stay just one point adrift of Atlético Madrid with seven matches left to play.
Espanyol’s Lice Chamorro broke the deadlock in the closing stages of the first half against Levante. The 26-year-old lofted the ball in off the far post after she had seen her initial cross blocked.
The hosts were reduced to 10 players when Mar Torras was sent off for two bookable offences in the 66th minute. However, Levante failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage as their three-game unbeaten run came to an end. The visitors remain just one point clear of safety, while the hosts are now five points clear of danger after they clinched their first win since December.
Real Madrid pulled off a big Liga F upset to stun the majority of those in attendance at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Moments before half-time, Alba Redondo leapt high in the box to direct her header home from Caroline Møller’s near-post cross. Las Blancas took a narrow lead into the break before Caroline Graham Hansen headed Barcelona level in the 67th minute. The hosts thought they had completed the turnaround when Jana Fernández found the net, only for the assistant’s flag to rule out the goal. Replays showed that the Barcelona defender was onside, but with no VAR in operation in Liga F, the on-field call could not be overturned.
Real Madrid ultimately made full use of that reprieve, restoring their advantage in the 87th minute. Weir steered a first-time finish past Cata Coll after being teed up by fellow substitute Linda Caicedo. The Scotland international went on to grab her second in stoppage time, nodding home from close range to seal Real Madrid’s first victory over Barcelona at the 19th time of asking.
For Barcelona, it represents their second defeat of the Liga F season after previously losing to Levante in February. Real Madrid now move to within four points of the Liga F leaders.
Atlético Madrid took maximum points from their away meeting with Real Sociedad. The two sides played out a goalless first half before Gio found the breakthrough in the 53rd minute. The Brazilian drove the ball in at the near post to net her fourth league goal of the season. The 21-year-old then turned provider, laying the ball off for Luany to slide under the goalkeeper. Atleti extended their unbeaten run to nine league matches, while Real Sociedad are now winless in seven Liga F games.
Valencia are dreaming of pulling off a great escape after they followed a 1-0 win over Betis with a dominant performance against Madrid CFF. Aida Esteve drove the ball home from distance to get the hosts up and running in the 40th minute. Marina Martí quickly added a second from Esteve’s neat pass to give Valencia a healthy lead at the break.
Ainhoa Alguacil made it three from the penalty spot in the opening stages of the second period. Marta Carro then headed home from Esteve’s cross to take Valencia’s tally to four. Madrid CFF’s Emilie Nautnes pulled a goal back with over half an hour left to play, but her effort ultimately proved to be a mere consolation. Valencia moved to within six points of safety with seven games left to play.
Cristina Postigo opened the scoring in the 33rd minute of Sunday’s contest. The defender reached Paula Arana’s deep free kick ahead of the goalkeeper to guide home her second league goal of the season. Granada protected their narrow lead until Edna Imade doubled her team’s advantage in the closing stages. The 24-year-old nodded home from a corner to register her 13th goal of the Liga F campaign.
