French Ligue 2 side Tours FC have announced tragic death of 18-year-old midfielder Thomas Rodriguez.
Rodriguez played several times for the club’s reserve team and passed away in his sleep on Thursday night.
As a mark of respect, the Professional Football League (LFP) has postponed Tours’ match with Valenciennes, which was due to take place on Friday night and a minute’s silence will be held at all Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches this weekend to honour Rodriguez.
A statement released by the club on Friday read: “It is with extreme pain that Tours FC informs you of the passing of the young Thomas Rodriguez, who died on the night of Thursday 8 to Friday, March 9, 2018.
“Tours FC is shattered by this tragedy, which plunges the club into an immense sadness.”
The LFP added: “At this moment of great sadness, the LFP extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Thomas Rodriguez, as well as to all his team-mates and to the club of Tours FC.”
