Lille OSC defender Samuel Umtiti (29) has been hospitalised with a concussion following a clash of heads during Les Dogues’ 2-1 defeat against Stade de Reims on Tuesday night.
Umtiti suffered the injury in a collision with the diminutive Junya Ito in the 34th minute of Lille’s defeat, their first at home since August 2022. The France international, however, continued until half-time, despite a stretcher coming out on the pitch. Prime Video reported that Umtiti felt ill in the dressing room at half-time, and Alexsandro therefore replaced him at the break.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, transcribed by L’Équipe, Paulo Fonseca then revealed that Umtiti had been hospitalised. “He’s at the hospital. He has a concussion. We’re awaiting the results of the medical tests. He may not be able to play the next match,” said the Portuguese manager.
Lille face Le Havre AC on Sunday, and it now looks unlikely that Umtiti, who was competing in just his third Ligue 1 match for his new club, will make the trip. Yusuf Yazici was also forced off during the first half of Tuesday’s defeat at the Stade Pierre Mauroy. He suffered an ankle injury in the 23rd minute and was replaced by Edon Zhegrova. His participation against Le Havre may also be compromised.
L’Équipe have since added that Umtiti was able to quickly leave the hospital last night and he was able to spend the night at home. He is expected at Lille’s training ground on Wednesday for an update on his medical situation.
