Liverpool’s Midfield Dilemma: Who Stays, Who Goes, and Who Comes In?

Liverpool’s midfield has been a focal point of change over recent seasons, and with Arne Slot set to take charge, further adjustments could be on the horizon. Speaking on The Transfer Show for Anfield Index, Dave Davis outlined the potential incomings and outgoings in the Reds’ engine room. With contract decisions, potential sales, and new arrivals on the cards, Liverpool’s midfield could look very different next season.

The Core Four: Untouchable and Here to Stay

Liverpool’s midfield rebuild last summer brought in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch, while Curtis Jones continued his development as a key figure in the squad. Davis was clear about their importance, stating:

“Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Ryan Gravenberch are going nowhere. That is the solid four to build on.”

He went further, questioning whether any other team in the Premier League has a better midfield foundation, adding:

“Is there a better central midfield combination in the Premier League?”

With these four players forming the backbone of the midfield, Slot is expected to shape his tactics around them.

Harvey Elliott: A Player With a Decision to Make

Harvey Elliott’s situation is less certain. While highly regarded by fans and teammates, his lack of minutes raises concerns. Davis highlighted the limited game time under Slot:

“Harvey Elliott has played a grand total of 503 minutes in all competitions this season, including two full 90s in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Take those away, and he’s only played 76 minutes in the Premier League—less than a full game.”

Despite his talent, Elliott’s role seems to be shrinking. Davis described him as a “game-state player”, explaining that he is best suited to matches where Liverpool need creativity against a deep block. However, the numbers suggest that Slot does not see him as a regular starter.

Davis speculated that Elliott might need to consider his future:

“I think he has a decision to make this summer. Does he want to stay at the club he loves but accept where he is in the pecking order, or does he move on?”

With reported interest from clubs like Brighton and Aston Villa, Elliott could be tempted by regular football elsewhere.

Wataru Endō: Cult Hero But Likely Departure

Wataru Endō has become a fan favourite, known for his tough tackling and leadership. However, at 32 years old, his long-term future is uncertain. Davis acknowledged his growing role but suggested he could leave:

“Endō made a call last summer, rejecting a move away, and has fought his way into Slot’s plans. But at 32, with another midfielder likely to come in, will he want to stay if his minutes are squeezed even further?”

Despite gaining Slot’s trust, Endō could attract interest from the Bundesliga or other European leagues.

Potential Midfield Additions

Liverpool are expected to reinforce the midfield again this summer. Davis indicated that a defensive midfielder is a priority: “Liverpool are looking for a number six. That’s non-negotiable.”

Names such as Brighton’s Carlos Baleba have been mentioned, with the Reds keen to add physicality and defensive stability to their midfield.

New Midfielder Incoming?

Liverpool are expected to sign at least one new midfielder this summer. Davis made it clear that reinforcements are coming:

“A midfielder is likely to come in, and I suspect those two [Elliott and Endō] depart.”

While Liverpool’s first-choice midfield appears settled, depth remains a question. Slot may look to bring in a more physical, defensively sound player to support Mac Allister in deeper roles.

Fabinho’s Replacement Still Needed

One lingering issue for Liverpool is the lack of a direct Fabinho replacement. Davis acknowledged that last summer’s business addressed many concerns but didn’t fully resolve the holding midfield role. “Liverpool still haven’t replaced Fabinho properly, and that has to be fixed.”

A specialist defensive midfielder is likely to be high on the agenda, allowing Gravenberch to play further forward and giving Slot the balance he needs in midfield.

Key Summer For Liverpool’s Midfield

Liverpool’s midfield remains a work in progress. While Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are key pieces, uncertainty surrounds Elliott and Endō. The search for a defensive midfielder will be crucial, and further additions may depend on departures.

With Arne Slot set to implement his ideas, Liverpool’s midfield evolution is far from over.
