Arne Slot has said Mohamed Salah’s record ‘speaks for itself’ after being asked whether the Liverpool forward was the world’s best player right now.

Salah has produced a stunning season for Liverpool to lead the Premier League for both goals and assists. He has scored 17 times and provided 13 assists, a record for a Premier League player at this stage of a season.

No player in Europe’s top five leagues has been involved in more goals than Salah, who has been named a frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United this weekend, Slot was asked whether the 32-year-old was the world’s finest footballer.

“I think it’s difficult to compare players. If I only look at my own team, Virgil [van Dijk] also has an outstanding season but he doesn’t have the numbers because he is a defender. The numbers Mo has speaks for itself. If you simply look at the numbers and the way he’s playing, he’s definitely a great, great player.”

Slot spoke further on the impact of Virgil van Dijk this season, who has captained the Reds to the top of the Premier League and Champions League standings. He is one of three high-profile players out of contract in the summer, alongside Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Slot discussed the Dutch defender’s importance and said Van Dijk is a player ‘who leads the team from start to finish’.

“The best players in the world have so many great attributes. Virgil has so much game in intelligence. He can wait to play a ball through the lines. He is doing outstanding for us. He is also the one who leads the team from start to finish. He brings a lot of positive energy to the group.

“He’s done really well but that is the standard of this club. You have to keep staying at this level.”
