Liverpool, still nursing injuries in key areas, head into the weekend with mixed news on player fitness. Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold are edging closer to full recovery following hamstring injuries. However, the duo remains unavailable for Liverpool’s Sunday fixture against Southampton. In brighter news, Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota have returned to training, though their involvement remains uncertain. Arne Slot, tasked with keeping Liverpool’s five-point lead intact, faces tough decisions as title pressure builds.

Liverpool are not alone in battling injury woes. Reports from Liverpool.com suggest, title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal also face significant setbacks. Pep Guardiola has confirmed that City will be without Mateo Kovacic for up to four weeks due to a midfield issue. This compounds City’s existing challenges, with Ballon d’Or winner Rodri already sidelined. City have dropped points in recent weeks, even experiencing an unprecedented four-game losing streak before the international break. While John Stones, Manuel Akanji, and Nathan Ake have returned to training, Guardiola remains cautious.

“John [Stones] trained good, Manu [Akanji] trained good. Nathan [Ake] is coming back to training, so we didn’t have any centre-backs, and now we have three,” Guardiola said. “Ruben [Dias] is out but hopefully back soon. Some players recover better.”
Guardiola’s emphasis on team morale is clear as he reflects on the international break’s impact. “These 10 days some players recovered a little. I don’t know if they are ready to play 90 minutes or play from the beginning but to see the training session and see their faces was a really good boost for all of us,” he said.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also shared updates on his squad, confirming that Ben White will miss several months following knee surgery. Arteta emphasised the need to protect White despite his determination. “We know that Ben is going to push every boundary, but it got to the point where we have to protect the player and we decided to do the surgery,” Arteta explained. Arsenal’s defensive issues continue, with Takehiro Tomiyasu unavailable and summer signing Riccardo Calafiori now preparing to step into the role.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s midfield and attacking options offer some relief, with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Leandro Trossard expected to recover from minor knocks in time for Saturday’s match against Nottingham Forest.
With Liverpool’s closest competitors also grappling with injuries, the weekend’s fixtures will be pivotal in shaping the title race. Slot’s Liverpool must capitalise on any slip-ups from City and Arsenal while maintaining their own resilience against Southampton. The return of key players could define the narrative for all three clubs as the festive schedule looms.
Excited Liverpool fans will find solace in knowing the injury list is beginning to shrink at a crucial juncture. Alisson and Alexander-Arnold’s recovery is particularly timely given their influence in orchestrating play from deep. Slot’s decision-making in managing fitness, particularly for Jota and Chiesa, could be the difference in extending the club’s lead atop the Premier League.
From a concerned fan’s perspective, Liverpool’s depth is being tested. Southampton may not be a traditional powerhouse, but underestimating them in light of the current injuries could be disastrous. Fans will hope Slot can rotate effectively without sacrificing points.
Meanwhile, City and Arsenal’s woes might offer a glimmer of hope for Liverpool supporters. Both sides’ absences in critical positions could destabilise their form, but Liverpool’s own ability to seize this advantage is yet to be seen.
The festive period is notoriously gruelling in the Premier League. Injuries, squad depth, and tactical adaptability will be critical for Liverpool and their rivals. Slot has already shown resilience in the face of adversity—now, it’s time for him and his squad to prove they can go the distance.
