Liverpool have been dealt a big blow after Ibrahima Konate was ruled out of their crucial clash with Manchester City this weekend.
Konate picked up an injury during the 2-0 win over Real Madrid on Wednesday night and is facing a spell on the sidelines.
The extent of the Frenchman’s injury is not clear, but Konate posted a message on social media suggesting he will miss the club’s upcoming schedule.
“So frustrating to pick up this injury right at the end of a great game on Wednesday night,” the defender wrote on Instagram.
“Now we start the recovery process but one thing I promise is I will be come back and be the best I can be once again. Thank you for the amazing support Anfield. Inshallah we will keep going and I will support the team every step of the way.”
Konate’s absence is a major blow to Liverpool with the 25-year-old having been in excellent form during the current campaign.
His partnership with Virgil van Dijk in central defence has helped Liverpool to the Premier League’s best defensive record, while the Reds have conceded just once in five Champions League games. Konate ranks third in the Premier League for percentage of aerial duels won this season.
Joe Gomez or Jarell Quansah will replace him for Sunday’s fixture with Manchester City. Liverpool will move 11 points clear of the champions with a win at Anfield.
Conor Bradley also picked up an issue in the Champions League win over Real Madrid, though Trent Alexander-Arnold made his return to the bench against the Spaniards. Arne Slot has confirmed that Alexander-Arnold is fit and ready to start at the weekend.
