Liverpool have been dealt a double injury blow, with both Joe Gomez and Cody Gakpo facing spells out of the team.
Gomez sustained a hamstring injury against Plymouth in the Fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup. He was on the pitch for just 10 minutes before suffering a recurrence of the injury that had kept him out since December after the 5-0 win vs West Ham. With only three months left in the 2024/25 season, concerns are growing over whether Gomez will feature again this campaign. Manager Arne Slot provided an update on the centre-back’s situation, confirming that the defender will be sidelined for several weeks.“Joe will take quite a long time. He is going to be out for numerous weeks because of the hamstring injury,” Slot said. “He’s been working hard to come back, but after just two or three minutes on the pitch, we saw him make a sprint and then he was out again. That’s always tough for a player, especially at this stage of the season.”
While surgery has not been ruled out, Slot added that Gomez could return before the end of the season. “He might need surgery, but we’re still assessing that. We expect him to be back towards the end of the season,” he said.
Slot also provided an update on fellow attacker Gakpo. The Netherlands international missed Liverpool’s recent victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers due to a knock sustained in the draw against Everton.Slot said Gakpo is close to returning but did not provide a specific timeline for his recovery. He did confirm Gakpo is unavailable for Liverpool’s trip to Villa Park on Wednesday evening.
The Reds can welcome back Curtis Jones though from suspension, after he received a red card in the 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby, and served his one-match ban over the weekend.Liverpool are still dealing with a few injury problems as they continue a crucial run of fixtures in the Premier League. This week could potentially be vital in the title race with Aston Villa tomorrow evening and Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.
